On a late Saturday afternoon in sunny Paris, Maria advanced to the fourth round of the second Grand Slam of 2011. Maria defeated Yung-Jan Chan of Taipei 6-2 6-3 in 1 hour and 29 minutes. From Maria’s second round match on Thursday until 4-0 in the first set, Maria won fifteen straight games but the run ended when Chan held her serve for 4-1. Maria dropped only one more game as she won the set 6-2 in 46 minutes. Maria’s service statistics in this set were impressive as she had a winning percentage of 64% on first serve and 100% on second serve. The first four games of the second set were holds of serve until Maria broke Chan’s serve to lead 3-2 when Chan netted a backhand. Chan levelled the set in the next game as she broke Maria’s serve when she hit a forehand winner. Maria then took the next three games to take the match and won the match when Chan hit an overhead long. Maria talks about the match: “I was quite pleased after playing a three set match that I had a quicker one today. I definitely feel I can be more aggressive though. I felt like some balls I was a little bit late to. I just need to more forward a bit more.” In Monday’s fourth round clash, Maria is up against No.12 seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland.
